  Beaver (Castor Canadensis)



The Beaver
 

The beaver is one of Canada's famous animals. These small creatures live in ponds, lakes, rivers etc close to trees.

Did you know? A beaver's home is called a lodge.

They build amazing lodge's, by creating a small channel which leads to a pond that they have dug. They build the lodge in the middle of the pond, to keep themselves safe from predators.

The beaver has very sharp teeth, and they are also very strong. So strong, that they can in gnaw through large tree trunks.

Did you know? The beaver is classed as a rodent. Beavers are related to mice and rats!

The beaver weighs about 20 kgs, but can weigh as much as 30 kgs. They are between 60 to 80 cms in length. They have a long flat tail which is about 30 cms long. The tail is wide and hairless, and is predominantly used for balance and steering whilst swimming. It can also be used for warning signals, as the beaver will slap its tail against the water creating a loud bang. The tail also is a fat repository which helps them to survive during winter.

The beaver's diet consists of leaves and bark from fallen trees, and after they have finished feeding, they will use the remaining wood or twigs to improve their lodge.

Amazing Animal Fact:  The beaver is the largest rodent in North America.
