  Bobcat (Felis Rufus)

The Bobcat demonstrates its agility.

The bobcat is one of three wild cat species to be found in Canada. The others are the Canadian lynx and the cougar. Nova Scotia has the highest population of bobcats in North America.

They stand about 25 cms (or two feet) tall and weigh about 9 kilograms (or 20 pounds). They have a light brown coat of fur, sharp claws and sharp teeth.

These cats are too small to hunt people, but will hunt domesticated cats and birds, etc. The bobcat is a carnivorous animal, meaning that it only feeds on meat. Their sharp claws and teeth aid them in their hunt, and they can bring down animals as large as a deer. They usually however feed on rabbits, squirrels or birds.

They are very agile creatures, and can run at speeds of up to 50 km/h (about 30 mph). They can climb trees, and like all cats, have an extraordinary sense of sight and hearing.

Amazing Fact: The bobcat will put its back feet in the same spot as the front feet whilst hunting, to achieve quieter movement.
