  Coyote (Canis latrans)

The Coyote

The coyote is a wild dog, which are widespread across Canada and across the United States. They are pack animals, and the coyote family usually live together in a den. They usually stay in their dens for the day, but at dusk they will go out to hunt for food. The pack will control their own territory.

Their fur ranges from light brown, to light grey with a hint of red. The tip of their tail is black. Like most canines, they have a keen sense of smell, and are able to pick up animal tracks and follow them when hunting. Coyotes also hunt animals as large as an elk or deer, they do this by hunting in packs and working together to bring down their prey.

Did you know? The movement of the coyotes ears communicates their rank amongst the pack.

The coyote weighs an average of about 14 kilograms (30 pounds). They are on average 127 cms in length (50 inches) which includes the length of the tail. They stand about 43 cms (17 inches) at the shoulder.

Amazing animal fact: The coyote can run at almost 65 km/ph (about 40 mph).

An average of about six pups are born in the den. They will stay in the den and the mother looks after the pups for about a month. After this time, they will come out and the parents will teach the pup to hunt and fend for itself.

They usually feed on small mammals, reptiles and even insects. They also feed on carrion.
