| Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) | ||||
![]() The Little Brown Bat The brown bat is a small animal, which averages about 9 cms in length. It is, hence the name, brown in colour, with a lighter shade of brown on its chest and stomach. They weigh only about 8 grams. They inhabit southern Canada, in dark places. They are found in higher numbers in eastern Canada. Their choice of dwelling is a cave, or an old shed. They will also live happily in cracks in walls, or in bushy trees. |
Did you know? The little brown bat can eat up to 10 mosquitoes in a minute. At dusk, the bat will begin its feeding. They will eat all kinds of insects, moths, flies, mosquitoes, etcetera. The female bat will give birth to a live bat in May or June, who will stay attached to its mother for two weeks. When the bat reaches about three weeks, they develop their own independence and are able to fly and feed on by themselves. They have great eyesight during the day, but cannot see well in the dark. They manage to fly and feed on insects in the night via their unique radar ability. They emit high frequency sounds, which are then deflected on impact of objects. The bat picks up the deflection (or echo), and therefore knows that there is an object in its path. This amazing technique is known as echolocation. Dolphins also use echolocation. Did you know? The bat is the only mammal that can fly.
