![]() The Canadian Red Fox The red fox is found throughout Canada, and resembles a small dog. They weigh between 3.5 to 7 kilograms, and average about a metre in length (including tail). Their long bushy tail has a white tip. They feed on small mammals such as mice, hares, lemmings, etcetera. They also eat small insects and plant matter. Did you know? A group of foxes is called a skulk. |
The red fox will usually inhabit an existing burrow made by another animal. If one is not found, they will dig their own, providing the ground is soft enough. They have many predators, and are hunted by wolves, bobcats, coyotes and more. They however can be cunning and clever, and purposely run through water to evade a predator. The predator cannot follow the foxes scent through water. The vixen (female) has an average of five pups in the spring, and stays with her pups for about four months. The male hunts and brings food for the family, whilst the vixen stays to care for the pups and defend them from any danger.
