  Striped Skunk (Mephitis mephitis)

Striped Skunk
The Striped Skunk

The skunk is about the size of a domestic cat, weighing between 1.5 to 5 kilograms on average. They can grow up to 45 cms in length, and their tail can be another 20 to 40 cms in length. They have sharp strong claws, short legs, a bushy tail with a white tip, and covered in a black coat. They are easily distinguishable by two white stripes down the center of their back.

The skunk feeds on mainly plant matter, but will also consume small mammals, eggs and even insects. They are nocturnal animals, and rest throughout the day - at night they will emerge to feed and wander. If you see them active during the day, it could well mean the skunk is rabid.

The most well known fact about skunks is their ability to produce an unpleasant smell. They can spray the fluid a fair distance, up to around three or four meters.

They use this as their defence method against predators. They will hiss and make a growling sound, and their tail will stick up vertically before spraying. The smell is so strong, it can carry on for over a kilometer!.

The skunk mates in February to April and has a gestation period of 62-66 days. The litter usually has between 3-6 skunks which are born around the middle of May.

Did you know? The odour may be removed from the skunk's musk, and then used in perfume.

It is commonly thought that skunks can be a problem in your backyard - but they may actually help it! Being omnivores, they will feed on grubs and insects that are pests to your gardens. They can also eat mice.
